Measure, Manage, Control

“Intelligent power” provides remote monitoring and, in some cases, remote switching of power outlets. By connecting an intelligent power strip to the IT network it is possible to monitor and manage the power consumption of each power strip or even each outlet from any position on that network.

Consumption and environmental data collected across the network from each power strip can be used to provide a detailed and accurate picture of the power use, temperature and humidity of your IT assets in the Data Centre or spread across your estate. This can provide your business with the accurate information required to improve Data Centre efficiency, reduce power consumption and comply with low carbon regulation and initiatives.

While the ability to remotely power down and reboot servers is extremely useful many organisations are currently unable to do this. Responsibility for power consumption may be divided between Facilities Management and IT. If no one has been given clear responsibility or a budget then important changes won’t happen. There is often a fear of turning off hardware in a data centre because there is a lack of information on the implications of powering down servers to reduce consumption.

IT vs Facilities

In many organisations this is changing as IT and Facilities teams adapt their processes and capabilities to meet the new needs of the business. In this changing environment purchasing a non-intelligent or semi-intelligent power strip without monitoring or switching capability may prove very expensive when they have to be replaced halfway through their lifecycle with an intelligent power strip.

Per outlet monitored intelligent PDU’s provide real time energy consumption data and enable you to:

  • Calculate the real capacity of your Data Centre and help you get more equipment in your existing data centre.
  • Measure kWh’s and the true operating costs of your equipment.
  • Predict faults by identifying unusual consumption.
  • Identify under utilised equipment
  • Reduce time spent travelling to site
  • Take a step towards becoming a more green data centre
